Nicholson Construction (Soletanche Freyssinet) has won a contract for earth-retaining works as part of Cleveland’s Westerly Storage Tunnel project, aimed at reducing the pollution of Lake Erie, in Ohio.

Awarded by the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD), this involves building some 2,926 m of tunnel for the storage of surplus water, and three shafts.

The teams will be creating a shaft with non-reinforced diaphragm walls (thickness: about 1 m; length: 46 m), a steel-reinforced diaphragm wall (thickness: 600 mm; depth: 21 m) and a non-reinforced diaphragm wall (thickness: 900 mm; length: 53 m). The Clean Lake project is scheduled for completion in 2036.
