Opening a new metro line in Cairo
10 April 2024 - Events - Egypt
After five and a half years of work conducted by VINCI Construction Grands Projets, the 3B section of the Cairo metro in Egypt is now open.
Spanning 6.2 km, it passes over a 3.8-km long viaduct, through a 1-km long tunnel and a 1.2-km stretch above ground. The line includes six stations – one underground, one above ground and four elevated – that were also built as part of the project, which mobilised over 2,500 people at its peak. To complete the work, a number of challenges needed to be overcome, such as completing building work near to densely populated areas, as well as taking the line over a six-lane motorway. Each day, 40,000 people will use the new line, which is the first to connect the north-east of Cairo.
