The opening to traffic of the two Coentunnels means drivers will now be able to drive in both directions and on eight rather than just the original five lanes.

On 21 July 2014, in the presence of Jan Hendrik Dronkers, Director General of the Dutch Ministry of Water and Public Works, the two Coentunnels were formally opened after five years of works. The construction of the new Coentunnel, brought into service in spring 2013, meant the 40-year-old existing tunnel could be closed for renovation. The latter is now also open to traffic, completing what has been a major project. Located beneath the port of Amsterdam, the two tunnels, 750 m in length, will relieve congestion on Amsterdam’s busy western ring road and towards the north of the country. The 200,000 customers expected each day will be able to drive on eight lanes instead of the five previously available. Total investment in the project: €517 million.
Coentunnel Company, a jointly-owned subsidiary of VINCI Concessions, CFE and its subsidiary Dredging International and their Dutch and Belgian partners, will operate the entire infrastructure for 24 years, in accordance with the contract. The works, which have taken five years, were carried out by a consortium composed of VINCI Construction Grands Projets together with CFE, DEME, TBI, Dura Vermeer and Besix.
