28 January 2016 - Events - United Kingdom

After six years of works, the Lee Tunnel in London was inaugurated on 28 January, in the presence of the project teams, by the city’s mayor, Boris Johnson. Implemented by VINCI Construction Grands Projets and Bachy Soletanche (VINCI Construction) in a joint venture with Morgan Sindall, the project involved driving a 7 km-long tunnel at a depth of between 55 and 75 m – the deepest ever built under London – with the aim of reducing by some 40% the amount of polluted water being discharged each year into the Thames.
Thanks to this tunnel, this water is now captured at source and treated at the wastewater treatment plant in Beckton, in the east of the British capital. Total project completion is scheduled for spring 2016.
