1 June 2014 - Projects update and handover - Egypt
On 7 May 2014, the Egyptian authorities brought into service the 7.2 km stretch of phase 2 of Line 3 of the Cairo metro, which serves five new stations (Cairo Fair, Stadium, Kolleyet el Banat, Al Ahram and Haroun El Rachid) in the east of the capital. Launched in May 2009 and delivered five months ahead of schedule, the civil engineering works on this project, headed by VINCI Construction Grands Projets alongside Bouygues Travaux Publics, Orascom Construction and Arab Contractors, involved more than 3,000 Egyptian workers. ETF (Eurovia), in a joint venture with Orascom, was charged with laying the track. Being developed in stages, Line 3 of the metro will ultimately be almost 40 km in length, crossing the Egyptian capital from east to west and linking the airport with the left bank of the Nile. It is part of a programme aimed at easing congestion in Cairo and contributing to limiting pollution in North Africa’s largest urban area.
