Dredging for the future port in Doha

As part of the New Port project, concerning the creation of a new port in Doha, in Qatar, Medco, a subsidiary of DEME, a CFE company (VINCI Construction), has been awarded a dredging contract worth some €941 million by the New Port Project Steering Committee, a body acting under the authority of the Qatari government. This contract involves dredging the access channel (length: 20 km; depth: 15 m) and a basin for the future base of the Qatari navy, the backfilling of some 4.5 sq. km on which the naval base will be built, ramming and soil improvement operations and the construction of two rip-rap breakwaters, as well as the supply and installation of navigation aids. In total, over 45 million cu. metres of materials will have to be dredged. Medco will also be undertaking operations to protect the environment, involving moving coral, seaweed, plant and mangrove sites.
The works began in March 2012 and will be completed early in 2016.
