Another milestone on the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link project
7 November 2024 - Projects update and handover - Denmark
The Femern Link Contractors (FLC) consortium, led by VINCI Construction Grands Projets, has cleared another key milestone in the construction of the world’s longest immersed tunnel, between Denmark and Germany: the first of the 10 special elements (which weigh 24,000 tonnes each and were cast on land) has now reached the upper basin of the Work Harbour.
The operation, involving two large pushers moving the element at a speed of 13 metres per hour, took 12 hours. The finished Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link will be made up of 79 standard tunnel elements (each 217 metres long) and 10 special elements (one every 2.5 km). The special elements will house all the technical equipment for the tunnel (water, ventilation and electricity) and have extra space for a lay-by and elevators in one of the motorway tubes.
